LUBBOCK Texas – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that anyone aged 6 months and older get a flu shot. Additionally, the COVID-19 vaccine has been approved for people over 12 years of age.

Tim Purser, director of pharmacy at United Supermarkets, said with the flu season resuming in October and the COVID-19 virus continuing to plague the southern plains, it is important to get both vaccines.

Purser said he was safe to get both the COVID-19 vaccine and the flu shot.

“A guest could come in for a flu shot and a COVID vaccine on the same visit, that’s okay. A guest who [needs] either primary, secondary or even the booster dose of COVID-19 can get the flu shot with any of these doses. “

John Villareal, pharmacy manager at Market Street on 98th Street and Quaker Avenue, said there is a popular misconception about the flu vaccine causing the flu.

“People think the flu shot gives them the flu, that’s a complete misconception,” Villareal said, “Often times the patient is exposed to the flu virus at least a few days or hours before the shot. “

Villareal said their pharmacies vaccinate people aged 7 and older for the flu shot.

Purser said he is strongly encouraged to make an appointment for either vaccine, but it is not mandatory.
