Humana Names Dr. Andrew Agwunobi President of the Company’s Home Solutions Business

LOUISVILLE, Ky.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM), a leading health insurance and healthcare services company, has hired healthcare industry veteran Andrew (Andy) Agwunobi, MD, MBA healthcare, as the new president of the company’s Home Solutions business. Dr. Agwunobi comes to Humana from the University of Connecticut, where he is currently acting university president and CEO of UConn Health System. In his new role, Dr. Agwunobi will report directly to Humana’s President and CEO, Bruce Broussard, and will be a member of Humana’s leadership team, effective February 21.

“Andy is exactly the person we need for this critical Humana role leading our Home Solutions business,” Broussard said. “He has a real passion for home care. He was responsible for a home care organization as part of an integrated system. He has extensive operational experience with for-profit and not-for-profit organizations, and is a medical doctor – he understands the value of home care, why older adults want more, and our vision at Humana to make it easier for people to access care they need at home.

Prior to his years at UConn, Dr. Agwunobi led St. Joseph Health System at 14 hospitals as Chief Operating Officer and led Providence Health Care System at 5 hospitals as CEO. He also served as secretary of the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration, where he oversaw the state’s then $16 billion health care administration budget. Most recently, in his role as CEO of UConn Health, Dr. Agwunobi executed strategies that resulted in significant revenue and operational growth. He also led the development of value-based care at UConn Health, including population health management.

Dr. Agwunobi’s strong clinical knowledge – with an aptitude for identifying clinical cost drivers and opportunities to improve member care and experience – will help him and his team reduce the cost of care for Humana customers, while building a business model focused on patient health outcomes through home care.

“I am excited about Humana’s focus on its Home Solutions business, and particularly interested in the ways in which we can transform the home healthcare industry together,” said Dr. Agwunobi. “As the ongoing COVID pandemic has accelerated interest in and shifts to home care and home health models, I am very confident that we will be able to help the people we serve achieve better health outcomes My experience to date has prepared me well for this new opportunity with Humana.

Earlier in his life, after growing up in Scotland and Nigeria, Agwunobi trained as a medical student in Nigeria and later in Scotland. He is a pediatrician who earned his MD from the University of Jos in Nigeria and then an MBA from Stanford University. He completed his pediatric residency at Howard University Hospital.
